A substance that by its addition or presence tends to minimize the physical and chemical effects of one or more of the substances in a mixture. Properties often buffered include pH, oxidation potential and flame or plasma temperatures. or A substance whose purpose is to maintain a constant hydrogenion concentration in water solutions even where acids or alkalis are added. Each buffer has a characteristic limited range of pH over which it is effective.
