The Domesday Book is a manuscript record of the 'Great Survey' of much of England and parts of Wales completed in 1086 by order of King William the Conqueror. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle states that the survey was carried out 'into every shire... to ascertain... how many hundreds of hides were in the shire, what land the king himself had, and what livestock were on the land.' It was written in Latin and included two independent works: Little Domesday, which covered Essex, Norfolk, and Suffolk, and Great Domesday, which covered much of the remainder of England.
The Domesday Book is of great historical significance, providing a detailed snapshot of the social and economic structure of medieval England. It is considered one of the most important documents in English history, offering insights into land ownership, the feudal system, and the extent of royal authority. The survey's name, 'Domesday,' reflects its definitive and authoritative nature, likened to the Last Judgment, or 'Doomsday,' as its decisions were unalterable.
