The word founder comes from the Latin fundus, which means "bottom" or "base." When something "founders," it usually means it has hit rock bottom in some way. For example, when a ship founders, it sinks to the bottom of the sea, and if your venture is foundering, it isn't doing well and is consequently heading downward.
Usage The words founder and flounder are easily confused, not just because they sound similar, but also because the settings in which they are employed overlap. Founder meaning 'fail or come to naught' in its broadest sense, as in the program that failed due to a lack of organizational support. Flounder, on the other hand, meaning 'to struggle; to be perplexed,' as in new recruits stumbling around their first week.
