Founded in 1934 as the International Badminton Federation (IBF) with the participation of nine members (Denmark, France, Wales, Netherlands, England, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, and New Zealand), the BWF still has 176 members. At the Extraordinary General Assembly held in Madrid on September 24, 2006, the name change was decided, and the Badminton World Federation (BFW) was changed.
