Ionosphere

An atmospheric layer dominated by charged, or ionized, atoms that extend from about 38 to 400 miles above the Earth's surface. The part of the earth's outer atmosphere where free electrons arising from ionization are normally present in quantities sufficient to modify the propagation characteristics of radio waves traversing it.
