LGBT, or GLBT, emerged in the 1990s after the abbreviation LGB, and from the mid-to-late 1980s, the word gay began to represent the LGBT community. Many activists have switched to using the LGBT community, seeing the use of the gay community as an incomplete definition.

It is also sometimes used as LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or transgender) or LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex), LGBTTIQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transgender, Intersex, Queer).
