Methyl Alcohol

Most Common

Methanol, also known as methyl alcohol, wood alcohol, wood naphtha or wood spirits, is a chemical with the formula CH3OH. Methanol acquired the name "wood alcohol" because it was once produced chiefly as a byproduct of the destructive distillation of wood. Modern methanol is produced in a catalytic industrial process directly from carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen.

Methanol

Methanol, the simplest of the alcohol compounds, is a toxic, flammable liquid with a distinctive odour. Methanol is mainly produced by the reforming of hydrocarbon feedstock syngas, which is mainly derived from natural gas, but can also be derived from coal or refinery residues. As methanol is relatively simple to ship, it provides a means to exploit natural gas reserves which are too remote to be connected to consumers by pipeline, so called "stranded gas".
