Pilaster

A reinforced or enlarged portion of a masonry wall to provide support for vertical roof loads or lateral loads on the wall. A shallow, non-structural rectangular column, attached to, and projecting only slightly from, a wall surface. A rectangular column projecting only slightly from a wall, incorporates a capital, shaft and base, as one of the orders.
