Permanent Neonatal Diabetes

Permanent Neonatal Diabetes (PND) is a rare form of diabetes that is diagnosed within the first six months of life and persists throughout an individual's lifetime. In contrast to other types of diabetes that typically manifest later in life, PND is characterized by insufficient insulin production from the pancreas. Insulin is the hormone responsible for regulating blood sugar levels. PND is primarily caused by genetic mutations that affect the development and function of the beta cells in the pancreas. These mutations disrupt the normal production of insulin, resulting in chronically elevated blood sugar levels, also known as hyperglycemia.
