PON stands for various terms. Discover the full forms, meanings, and possible interpretations of PON across different fields and industries.
A passive optical network (PON) is a telecommunications network that uses point-to-multipoint fiber to the premises in which unpowered optical splitters are used to enable a single optical fiber to serve multiple premises. A PON consists of an optical line terminal (OLT) at the service provider's central office and a number of optical network units (ONUs) near end users. A PON reduces the amount of fiber and central office equipment required compared with point-to-point architectures. A passive optical network is a form of fiber-optic access network.
ComputerComputingDefinitionIT TerminologyTechnicalTechnologyAn enzyme associated with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) that is believed to protect against the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and hence to affect the risk of coronary artery disease. There are 3 paraoxonase genes (PON1, PON2 and PON3) all of which are clustered in the same region on chromosome 7. The severity of coronary artery disease, in terms of the number of diseased vessels, is affected by common genetic variations in the PON gene cluster.
