The tendency of current to stick to the outer layers of a conductor due to the presence of internal flux. The skin effect is more prominent at higher frequencies. In an alternating current system, a phenomenon that occurs at increased frequencies causing an increase in resistance of the conductor leaving the outer skin to carry most of the current.
