Transcoder free operation, also known as Out of band transcoder control, is the concept of eliminating the transcoding function from a call path in a telecommunication network. A call between two mobile stations in a classic GSM network required two transcoding functions, one at each BSC. The Transcoder and Rate Adaptation Unit, or TRAU, was used to implement the transcoding capability. TDM E1 or STM-1 were used to connect TRAU to BSC and MSC.
