A token is a group of bits that are transferred between computers on a token-ring network. Whichever computer has the token can send data to the other systems on the network. This ensures that only one computer can send data at a time. A token may also refer to a network security card, also known as a hard token. Example: "Computers on a token-ring network can only send data when they have the token."
