The decree law establishing Yuzuncu Yl University, No 41, was issued on July 20, 1982. On the northern bank of Lake Van, around the 15th kilometre of the Erciş road, is where the university is located. Due to the huge Van Earthquake on October 23, 2011, the University, which has roughly 30,000 students, took a pause from education for a while.
