Tensile Strength

The pulling stress required to break a given specimen. Area used in computing strength is usually the original, rather than the necked-down area. The longitudinal stress required to break a prescribed specimen divided by the original cross-sectional area at the point of rupture, within the gauge boundaries sustained by the specimen during the test. The maximum tensile stress sustained by a material before failure in a tension test.
